The biggest mistake in UK racing isn’t backing a loser. No, it’s backing a false favourite. If you want to move from being a hopeful punter to a profitable bettor, you have to learn to fade the herd and find the true value hiding in the mid-market.
Let's face facts: the favourite is the most popular horse in the race, not necessarily the best value. Every Saturday, we see the same phenomenon: the public piles their hard-earned cash onto the horse that's had the most media hype, the biggest name jockey, or the clearest recent win. The odds tumble, the moneyline shrinks and by the time the tapes go up, the favourite’s price is nowhere near what it should be, statistically speaking. They’ve become a "false favourite": a horse whose true chance of winning does not justify the poor odds being offered.
