BHA confirms changes to Doncaster's fixtures on Friday 25 April and Saturday 26 April

2025/04/17

17/04/2025 @ 14:15:00 The British Horseracing Authority (BHA) can confirm that due to the round course at Doncaster being deemed unraceable, as agreed by the BHA Inspectorate, the race programmes at their fixtures on Friday 25 April and Saturday 26 April are being amended. Following a recent infestation of leatherjackets (which have already been treated), and the impact of the extraordinarily dry spring, areas of the round course at Doncaster require further remedial work. Therefore, six of the seven programmed round course races across both fixtures are being abandoned, with the other – Race 11766 (Download The At The Races App Handicap, Class 5, 53-72, 1m) – being transferred from the round course to the straight mile on Friday 25 April. Two new straight course races will be added to each card to create six-race fixtures. Two of the abandoned races are being rescheduled. Race 11765 (Sky Sports Racing Virgin 535 Fillies' Handicap, Class 5, 56-75, 1m 2f) will now be run at Wetherby on Sunday 27 April, retaining its value of £8,500, as part of an eight-race card with no divisions. Race 11771 (Sky Sports Racing Virgin 535 EBF Premier Fillies' Handicap, Class 3, 71-90, 1m 4f) will now be run at Southwell's Premier Raceday on Sunday 27 April as an eighth programmed race. Reflecting the transfer of surface to the All-Weather, the race will now be run for £32,000 (originally £25,000), also bringing it into line with the rest of the Premier race values that day. The four additional races at Doncaster will be added as follows: Friday 24 April 7f 3yo 59-78 Handicap Class 4 5f 3yo 61-80 Handicap Class 4 Saturday 25 April 8f 4yo+ 46-65 handicap Class 6 5f 4yo+ 51-70 handicap Class 5 Doncaster Clerk of the Course David Attwood said: "Remedial work on the affected areas of the round course at Doncaster are already underway, and we are really encouraged with the progress. We are confident that it will be back in use for racing on Saturday 3 May. "Our thanks go to our colleagues at BHA, EBF and NTF for assisting in facilitating these moves and to all participants for their understanding." Notes to editors: 1. For further information on these changes please contact the BHA Racing Department on 0207 152 0050 or via [email protected].

Balding targets further Classic trial success with Royal Playwright

2025/04/17

Royal Playwright sets the standard as three-year-olds test their Classic credentials in the Listed BetMGM Burradon Stakes (1.15pm) over a mile. An impressive debut winner at Sandown Park, Royal Playwright finished third behind Field Of Gold in the G3 Solario Stakes and second to Wimbledon Hawkeye in the G2 Royal Lodge Stakes. Jeff Smith’s homebred trailed home last in the G1 Futurity Trophy at Doncaster on his final juvenile appearance, ending the campaign with a rating of 110. A Lope de Vega colt out of G1 Juddmonte International winner Arabian Queen, Royal Playwright will be hoping to perform better than his half-brother Arabian Storm, who could only finish ninth after being sent off favourite for the 2023 Burradon Stakes. James Fanshawe’s Glittering Legend has 6lb to find on BHA figures after making a successful reappearance in a mile conditions race at Kempton Park last month. Bowmark heads three contenders defending unbeaten records, with the Kingman colt quickening clear in a Kempton Park novice in December for John & Thady Gosden. The Irish challenge is made up of Titanium Emperor (Adrian Murray), who on debut defeated seasoned opposition in a mile conditions race at Dundalk, and dual Southwell winner Michael Scofield (Michael O’Callaghan). Course scorer Nordic Norm lines up for Karl Burke, who won the race 12 months ago with Cuban Tiger. Cloud Cover eyeing repeat win in BetMGM Fillies' And Mares' Championships Handicap I

2025/04/16

Cloud Cover will be looking to stamp her class on the opposition as she goes for back-to-back victories in the seven-furlong BetMGM Fillies' And Mares' Championships Handicap (2.25pm). Successful last year off a mark of 89, James Tate’s mare is a stone higher this time following a Listed success in France and a smooth display at Newcastle’s AWC Trials Day. Cloud Cover concedes upwards of 20lb to all bar one of her 13 rivals, with the exception being the 92-rated Aramis Grey (Jack Jones), who is an eight-time winner on the all-weather. The Ed Bethell-trained Quandary captured the other trial for this race at Lingfield Park, where she had Callianassa (Brian Ellison), Aramis Grey, Viennoise (David O’Meara) and Brazilian Rose (Rebecca Menzies) in arrears. Michael Herrington’s Powdering defeated Quandary at Southwell in February and has since scored again at the Nottinghamshire track, while Gaiety Musical is seeking her fifth win of 2025 for David Evans. Shallow moves up to seven furlongs for the first time, with Richard Spencer’s filly having won two of her last three starts at Kempton Park. Pasha makes her first appearance for James Owen since leaving Paul & Oliver Cole. Delicacy (Roger Fell), Biplane (John Wainwright), Too Much (David Thompson) and Heavenly Weather (Tracy Waggott) all race from significantly out of the handicap.

So Darn Hot to bring the heat in BetMGM All-Weather 3 Year Old Championships

2025/04/16

Kevin Philippart de Foy is hoping So Darn Hot can fulfil a long-term plan in the BetMGM All-Weather 3 Year Old Championships Handicap (1.50pm) over six furlongs. Runner-up at Newcastle earlier in the season, So Darn Hot is on for a £35,000 bonus after posting clear-cut victories at Newcastle and Lingfield Park’s AWC Trials Days, with his rating increasing 12lb to 93. Andrew Balding has three runners as he chases a third straight victory in the race. The Kingsclere trainer saddles Berkshire Whisper, one of four handicap debutants in the field, Humam and Lingfield Park eye-catcher Marchogion. The William Haggas-trained Carbine Harvester chased home So Darn Hot at Lingfield Park and boosted the form at Kempton Park last week, for which he shoulders a 6lb penalty. Hello Zaman (James Tate) and Don Pacifico (Simon & Ed Crisford) line up in handicap company for the first time, having filled the places behind subsequent G3 Greenham Stakes fourth Diablo Rojo in a Lingfield Park novice. Irish raider Dark Ace is another handicap debutant, with Ado McGuiness’ runner successful in two of his three starts at Dundalk this winter. James Ferguson’s Cyclonite and Clive Cox’s Good Banter both have form with So Darn Hot already this season, while Tuco Salamanca drops down in trip after winning three of his last four starts for Ollie Sangster. Leadenhall Street (James Fanshawe), Megaphone (George Boughey) and Master Technician (Rod Millman), who have all notched wins on the all-weather in 2025, complete the field.

Paul Hanagan launches his first ownership syndicate, which will raise funds for Yorkshire Air Ambulance In

2025/04/16

The new Hanagan & Co syndicate will be raising money for Yorkshire Air Ambulance Esteemed former dual champion flat Jockey and Director of Racing at The Good Racing Company, Paul Hanagan, has launched his first ever ownwership syndicate. The Hanagan & Co syndicate will sell shares in Havana Oaks, a promising 2-year-old mentally sharp filly with a sprinter’s action and touch of class. This new syndicate offers enthusiasts the first opportunity to co-own a horse with a former dual champion flat Jockey. The Hanagan & Co ownership syndicate is the fifth charity partnership to launch under The Good Racing Company, who are behind the successful horses for causes for Rob Burrow and various Motor Neurone Disease charities and injured jockey Graham Lee. Hanagan handpicked Havana Oaks. She’s from the sire Havana Grey, who is proving to be one of the best young stallions in the world, having 22 stakes winners from only three crops of foals, and the stallion of The Good Racing Company’s very own superstar, Alfa Kellenic. Havana Oaks’ dam, Renaissance won as a two-year-old and was placed six times. Paul Hanagan, who became Director of Racing at The Good Racing Company in August 2023 says: “I’m really excited to finally launch my own ownership syndicate . It’s been something I’ve been considering for a while now, but I’ve been waiting for the right time and the right horse. Everything seems to have fallen into place with Havana Oaks, and I’m feeling confident she’s going to perform well. “Havana Oaks is appropriately named after her sire, Havana Grey, and one of the biggest winners of my career, The English Oaks at Epsom, on Taghrooda. With a lineage like that how can we go wrong?”

Roaring Legend chasing £35,000 bonus in BetUK All-Weather Championships Marathon Handicap

2025/04/16

Roaring Legend bids to crown a perfect season with a fourth win on the bounce in the BetUK All-Weather Championships Marathon Handicap (4.42pm) over two miles. The five-year-old has been a revelation since joining Hugo Palmer, following up a comeback win at Wolverhampton with AWC Trials Day victories at Newcastle and Lingfield Park, during which time his rating climbed 22lb to 104. Several other contenders are lining up on the back of career-best performances, including James Ferguson’s Wonder Legend, who comfortably defeated Plage De Havre (Andrew Balding) at Wolverhampton last month. Last year’s runner-up Duke Of Oxford has improved again this winter for Michael Bell, latterly winning the London Stayers' Series Final for a second time. Heathen has won twice this season for David O’Meara and boasts a good record fresh, having won four of his last five starts when returning from a break of 50 days or more. Ex-Godolphin runner Tribal Star tackles two miles for the first time for Ado McGuinness, with the son of Sea The Stars going down narrowly over an extended 10 furlongs at Dundalk last time out. Midnight Lion seeks a sixth course success this season for Jim Goldie, following a string of victories over 10 furlongs. Stable-mate Humble Spark also takes a hike in distance after three wins over middle distances this term. The Alan King-trained Tritonic is one of two dual-purpose performers in the lineup alongside Circuit Breaker for Jonjo & AJ O’Neill. King Chaos (Rebecca Menzies), Wonder (James Fanshawe), Weddell Sea (Mike Sowersby) and Chillhi (Brian Ellison) all have significant improvement to find from out of the handicap.

Burke has no weight concerns for Marshman in BetUK All-Weather Sprint Handicap

2025/04/16

Marshman aims to pull off a rare weight-carrying feat as he looks to defy a rating of 110 in the BetUK All-Weather Sprint Handicap (3.35pm) over six furlongs. Karl Burke’s five-year-old scored on his comeback at Newcastle’s AWC Trials Day and followed up with a dominant victory in the Listed BetUK Kachy Stakes at Lingfield Park. Only Trueshan has shouldered a higher BHA rating to victory on the all-weather at Newcastle when defying a mark of 120 in the 2022 Northumberland Plate. Two former winners of the race return for another crack, with defending champion Fivethousandtoone 3lb higher than last year and now in the care of Tim Easterby. Diligent Harry bids to become the first three-time winner on Finals Day, having landed this race in 2023 and the 2021 Three-Year-Old Championships for Clive Cox. James Fanshawe has two live players, with potential improver Heathcliff accompanied by Willem Twee, who was third in the G3 Chipchase Stakes at the course last summer. We Never Stop (Kevin Ryan) bids to follow up a recent class two success at Southwell, a race in which Badri (Michael Herrington) was badly hampered. Richard Spencer’s Run Boy Run went down by a neck to Marshman at Newcastle and has a 6lb pull in the weights, while Archie Watson’s Saint Lawrence is 1lb lower than when taking out the 2023 Wokingham at Royal Ascot. Richard Fahey goes for a fourth win in the race with Golden Mind, who had Heathcliff, Fivethousandtoone and Coachello (Mark Loughnane) in behind when scoring at Kempton Park in February. Apache Outlaw, who has only been out of the frame once in eight all-weather starts for Ado McGuiness, is one of two Irish-trained contenders alongside Daamberdiplomat for Johnny Murtagh. Multiple Newcastle scorer The Caltonian completes the field for Linda Perratt.

Old adversaries renew rivalry in BetUK Easter Classic

2025/04/16

Lightly raced six-year-olds Glen Buck and Old Harrovian head the betting as a quality field takes aim at the BetUK Easter Classic (4.07pm) over 10 furlongs, highlight of Finals Day at Newcastle on Good Friday, April 18. Glen Buck bested Old Harrovian at Southwell in January and was even more impressive in a 12-furlong handicap at the course last time out, taking his record for Roger Varian to four wins from five starts. Old Harrovian underlined the form in similarly emphatic fashion at Newcastle’s AWC Trials Day, teeing himself up for a £15,000 bonus in the process. His trainer Andrew Balding is the most successful handler on Finals Day with eight wins. The form of last year’s BetUK Easter Classic is represented, with runner-up Penzance (Mick Appleby) and French challenger Hooking (Philippe Decouz) returning for another tilt. Progressive fillies Charlotte’s Web and Power Of Destiny add another dimension to the lineup for Simon & Ed Crisford and Ralph Beckett. The duo were separated by a short-neck as they finished first and third in the BetMGM Winter Oaks earlier this season. Smart Hero is an unknown quantity over middle distances for James Tate, having won both of his starts at Wolverhampton since switching from sprinting. Jane Chapple-Hyam has two chances, with G3 scorer Claymore joined by one-time Derby hopeful Salamanca, who caught the eye recently in his prep at Chelmsford. Top weight Savvy Victory (Sean Woods), Dark Moon Rising (Kevin Ryan) and Paradias (Alan King) have all won class two prizes this term. Dream Harder (Ian Williams), who was third behind Glen Buck last time out, and Andaleep (Daniel & Claire Kubler) also run.
