Callan scorches home to land top riding honours
Neil Callan secured his first Alistair Haggis Silver Saddle after Adaay In Asia (4/1CF) produced a striking turn of foot to win the concluding Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup Sprint.
The three-quarter length victory was a second winner of the day for Callan, who topped the individual standings with 50pts, 13pts clear of runner-up Jamie Spencer.
Kieran Shoemark (33pts) finished in third to complete a 1-2-3 for Great Britain & Ireland.
Adaay In Asia, who was completing a hat-trick for trainer Harry Dunlop, made it five wins on the afternoon for a Great Britain & Ireland team that ended up running away with the overall prize.
The remaining three races were all won by the Ladies team.
Great Britain & Ireland ended the meeting with 132pts - 51pts clear of the Ladies (81pts). Rest of the World finished third on 72pts, with Europe fourth on 51pts.
Callan said: “It has been a great day. I thought my best rides were the first and the last and the two inbetween performed above expectations. I was quite open-minded coming into the last, just relax, let the filly do her thing, and she did. It's easy to ride them when they're doing that.”
Dunlop said: “Adaay In Asia is improving. She had a few little issues in the spring and we're just very proud of her. I think it was a tough race today, a much better race than at Goodwood, and she won it quite easily, so we've obviously got to go up in grade. She only cost 10,000 guineas and these horses don't come along very often. I'm just delighted for all the owners. We've been very lucky at the Shergar Cup and it's great to do it again – I am really chuffed."
Joanna Mason, who rode the third Admiral D, said:
“It was close. I needed the gaps to open – I was full of horse – but the gaps didn’t come. A bit of soft ground probably would have helped him and a bit more pace probably would have helped him, but he has run a brilliant race with a non-ideal situation. He is a lovely horse, and he is a trier.” Kerrin McEvoy said of the fourth Twelfth Night:
“He ran a good race and might enjoy a little bit further now he is running well. It has been a good day. I didn’t get a winner but it’s been a great fun day and we tried our best. It’s a pleasure to be here.”
